LAST Saturday’s races weren’t just for the horses, with locals battling it out for best dressed at the Silver City Cup’s Fashions on the Field.
The race-day competition had four awards: Miss Teen, Trendiest Chick, Best Dressed Gent, and Most Elegant Lady.
This year’s fierce competition was organised by fashion co-ordinator Rosie Siemer, and judged by make-up artist and beauty therapist Gemma Murray, long-time fashionista Maxine Clarke and local business owner Matt Petrou.
Ms Siemer said it was harder to get sponsors on board this year, potentially due to the recent natural disaster, but the community still came together to support the cause.
“We just felt that it wasn’t the best time of year to be asking local businesses to put their hands in their pockets when things weren’t very reliable with the economy,” she said.
“But it was lovely that those businesses came forward, these businesses sponsor events year in, year out. It’s wonderful.
“We were able to run the competition on the main stage this year. Last year, we had to have it out the back because it was too hot. So it was nice to be back on the main stage this year.”
When asked who had her favourite outfit this year, Ms Siemer nominated the Cup’s Most Elegant Lady winner, Sarah Bishop.
“Sarah was my favourite, I thought it was quite sweet that Sarah and her husband (Steve Bishop) won Most Elegant Lady and Best Dressed Gent,” Ms Siemer said.
The power couple were excited after their respective wins of the two major prizes.
“I attend and enter every year but have never won before,” Ms Bishop said.
“I just saw this outfit and loved it!”
Fashions on the Field finalist Jules Hall, who wore a co-ordinated pink outfit complete with matching pink Converse shoes, said Saturday was her first Cup in 30 years.
“We’re having a family get-together, we’re all here enjoying ourselves because we all love a bit of a bet,” Ms Hall said.
Ms Hall said she liked the Silver City Cup for its family-friendly, quiet quality, as opposed to bigger events like the St Pats Races held in March.
“It’s been very good,” she said. “The weather’s great, and people are really friendly.”
