Mine union scholarship helps student

SCHOLARSHIPS provided by the Mining and Energy Union Mine Workers Trust have been revealed, with a student selected from Broken Hill.

Open to MEU members or their dependents, the Mine Workers Trust gives out 20, $7000 scholarships to aid further study.

Broken Hill local, 21-year-old Elkie Philip, is a recipient of the competitive scholarship, applying through her father who is a union member and works in the mines.

Ms Philips is studying Diagnostic Radiography at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga and is in her second year of study; with the move to Wagga Wagga in 2024 her first time away from home.

To be accepted into the scholarship program, Ms Philips had to explain how her career will help the mining union in the future.

“I talked about how I just want to help the miners ensure that their well-being is always put above everything else,” Ms Philips said.

“I also spoke about how the investment in my degree will be able to help any future health problems that may arise.”

Ms Philips said the $7000 scholarship will help her support herself during the many unpaid work placements she has to do for her degree.

“I have placements this year, two four-week blocks,” she said. “At this stage I don’t know where I’m going to be placed for them so it’s definitely helped ease the pressure of money; being able to know that I have funds for accommodation.

“I have the two month blocks this year and then two eight-week blocks the year after, and then 36 weeks the year after that.

“So it will definitely help.”
