Choir still hitting the high notes after 90 years

SINGERS from the Broken Hill Philharmonic Choir will be presenting their 254th performance in celebration of the group’s 90th year this Sunday, with The Magic of Musicals concert at the Musicians Club..

Choir conductor Diane Magor has been a part of the group most of her life and leader for 17 years.

“They asked me to be the conductor and I said okay, just for a few years,” she said.

The Philharmonic Choir members rehearsed every week since their inception and Magor said they’ve only taken breaks during the Second World War and COVID pandemic.

“We rehearse every week, even when the power was out we were rehearsing by candlelight,” she said.

The concert on Sunday will feature about 30 members of the choir, which Magor said is double the numbers of singers the group had after COVID.

“We got down to about 15,” she said. “So I’m just thrilled that it’s built back up and that we have quite a few younger people involved now too.”

The age range of the choir members spans from 16 to 93 years old, and Magor said the camaraderie of the group is important, especially for older members who might feel socially isolated otherwise.

“We’ve had people who’ve been struggling with all kind of problems but they come here and we have a lot of fun in our practices,” she said.

The choir performs at weddings and funerals as well as at their concerts which they host a couple of times a year.

“This concert is all about the magic of musicals,” Magor said.

“So there are songs from Les Misérables, West Side Story, The Music Man and more.”

The he Magic of Musicals concert will take place at The Musicians Club this Sunday at 2pm with tickets are available on the door.

The Philharmonic Choir also always welcomes new members and Magor said that she doesn’t believe anyone can’t sing.

“If you think you can’t sing it’s all the more likely that you can,” she said.
