Filmmaker attends premier doco conference

JASON King, a Broken Hill-based filmmaker, has spent the week attending the prestigious Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC); networking and making connections for his upcoming project – a documentary honouring his late daughter.

King’s documentary project, which is in the early pitching stages, is titled The Jordan Liberty Project, named after his 18-year-old daughter who died from suicide in March 2023.

The film will follow King as he embarks on an emotional journey through the outback to Jordan’s birthplace in Alice Springs, carrying his young daughter’s ashes as he openly documents his grief leading up to her 21st birthday.

King said by attending the AIDC, he hoped to network and step into the next part of the filmmaking process; the development stage, which requires funding.

“The next stage is to basically find some development funding to continue the development process, keep writing the script, shoot some more higher-end content to develop something that then can attract bigger funding,” he said.

“The good thing is that the AIDC attracts lots of people who work in different areas as well.

“So you’ve got distributors, broadcasters, but also producers and directors, filmmakers, and even sound designers, composers and editors all in one place.

“It’s a really great opportunity.”

King said that living in Broken Hill increased the value of attending these kinds of networking events.

“Making any sort of film project is difficult and requires a collaborative effort,” Mr King said.

“Especially because I’m at the stage where I’m ready to start bringing some other people on board.

“I’ve already met some really great people that have been able to provide some really awesome feedback on my projects, and also introduce me to people who can help me and give me some great advice on how to take the next steps.

“It’s an amazing experience.”
