Young sports stars awarded

FOUR local swimmers have been awarded $500 each to help with their future training and competitions, thanks to Broken Hill’s Outback Emus Club.

Tahlia Millard and Cohen Clavel, from the Broken Hill Aquatic Stingrays, and Veniece Coorey and Hamilton Anflous from the Silver City Swim Club were assisted with the grants.

The Outback Emus began raising funds for junior sporting in 1991. The cricketing group travelled to England to compete, and on returning, began the charity which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years for junior sporting clubs across Broken Hill.

Veniece Coorey achieved gold in the Australian Junior Excellence Program, and qualified to swim four events at the upcoming Australian Age National Championships.

Hamilton Anflous won the overall trophy for best male in his age group in his first South Australian Country Championship in Mount Gambier, and broke five records at the local Sacred Heart Carnival.

Tahlia Millard has been the winner of the Broken Hill Acquatic’s Female Swimmer of the Season trophy for the past two years in a row.

Cohen Clavel, who joined the club in 2018, began breaking records in his first 12 months at the club, and soon was moved into the group’s performance squad.

Steve Odgers of the Outback Emus said the club is proud to be in a position to support the four recipients of the Pursuit of Excellence in Sport award for 2025.

“We’re proud to support these four outstanding junior sports stars and look forward to hearing of their future achievements,” he said.

“The Outback Emus would like to thank all businesses, and everyone who has supported our fundraising efforts — every cent raised goes towards assisting junior sport in Broken Hill.”
